Entrepreneurship

This is my passion! Supporting local business is important for Vernon’s economy. Providing support to local businesses allows them to be competitive in their products and services and this, in turn, gives residents higher buying power.

Entrepreneurs need more support at all stages of their business. As a member of Accelerate Okanagan, and having had the opportunity to watch and sit with the Angle Investors, I have first-hand experience of what an Okanagan-style “Silicone Valley” startup community can do.

Vernon, let’s take entrepreneurship to the next level!

In 2016, Vernon was ranked #21 as Canada’s Top Places to Grow and Start a Business: https://www.cfib-fcei.ca/sites/default/files/2017-12/rr3413.pdf

City Council does not create an entrepreneurial community–the people must do that. As a Councillor, I would support initiatives to create this growing dynamic and ensure new policies do not hurt or slow this growth.

Housing

I hold a brokerage license with the Real Estate Council of British Columbia and sit on the educational committee of the Professional Association of Managing Agents. These credentials, as well as my experience, allow me to approach Vernon’s housing sustainability beyond municipal levels.

Housing affects residents of all ages in Vernon. I have worked with both owners and tenants of all ages and families of all sizes. As a Councillor, I would make housing initiatives a priority.

This is NOT just a campaign speech–this is what I am already doing. I would drive this point home. I challenge anyone without experience, education or knowledge who says they can ‘fix’ the housing issue.

The City of Vernon has provided information on their website for more information on Vernon’s situation:

Community

Safety and homelessness is a concern of mine personally–my main office is located on downtown Main Street and I am heavily involved with events in Polson Park. Recently, while at work, I had to call RCMP to request their assistance in approaching one of my vacant managed properties.

Safety and homelessness will both be hot topics this election. Both affect us in all areas of our life. I support the direction of the Safety Task Force. For more information on this report, please read starting at page 35 ending page 55 on the City of Vernon’s agenda package:

Having been a representative of several not-for-profit organizations in Vernon, I know how difficult it is to present your cause, explain your passion and have your hand out asking for money, knowing the city’s contributions will dictate tomorrow’s activities. As a Councillor, I would help create an environment of philanthropy in Vernon.
Tourism

Promoting the growth of tourism in Vernon is important. The economic impact of the tourism sector is considerable, and is a foundation to Vernon’s growth and sustainability. With over 15 years working in tourism throughout British Columbia and Alberta, I am a huge supporter of tourism in general and will encourage tourism to grow. I will push to make sure opportunities are not missed.
